A playgroup Valentine's Day celebration is a fun play date option for the group. There are several options whether parents want to meet at someone's house for a kids' Valentine's Day party or get out into the community.

Kids' Valentine Ideas at Home

A Valentine's party is a simple way to celebrate at the home of a playgroup member. A playgroup Valentine's party gives flexibility in the activities. The Valentine activities are easily adaptable to meet different age levels within the playgroup. Setting up different activity centers with an adult at each center lets the kids spread out and complete the Valentine activities they want.

A homemade Valentine's card station gives the playgroup kids a chance to create cards for each other, their parents, grandparents and other relatives. Construction paper or cardstock works well as the base of the cards. Additional decorative paper, glitter glue, decorative edging scissors, stickers, ribbon and confetti give kids different options for decorating the cards.

Valentine's Day games add another option for the party. Valentine's-themed Bingo, Pin the Heart on Cupid and a Valentine-themed relay race are simple ideas for kids of all ages.

Valentine's Day cookie or cupcake decorating is another easy station to set up for a Valentine play date party. Bake the cookies or cupcakes before the party so they are cool and ready to decorate. Either homemade or store purchased frosting works well to decorate the cupcakes. Lots of sprinkles and Valentine candy create the decorations on the cookies or cupcakes.

An inexpensive Valentine gift exchange makes a fun addition to a playgroup Valentine's Day party. Have each child bring a small gift under a certain dollar amount. Put all of the gifts in a pile and let each child pick one.

Celebrating Valentine's Day in the Community

If the group prefers to get out on the holiday of love, organize a play date at a community event. Many child-friendly locations host Valentine events ideal for playgroups. Look for Valentine-themed events at the following community locations:

  • Library story hours
  • Children's museums
  • Pottery painting stores
  • Indoor play areas
  • Children's gymnasiums

If the community is lacking in appropriate kids' Valentine's Day events, create an event for the playgroup kids. Making and delivering Valentine's cards to residents of a nursing home or children's hospital gives the kids a community service project that relates to the holiday. Check on visiting restrictions before delivering the cards. Some places limit or prohibit children visiting, particularly during flu season.

Celebrate Valentine's Day With a Playgroup

Playgroups are beneficial for both the parents and kids, providing a social outlet for both. Taking advantage of the holiday celebrations with a Valentine play date gives the group a break from the usual play date ideas.
